The Ace for the Cure event is something our family looks forward to every year. Our boys, Gavin and Evan, just adore John Isner. They watch him on TV and love seeing him play in person.
On Sunday December 6th, the day began with a delicious lunch, outside in the beautiful 75 degree Florida Sunshine. Once we finished eating, it was onto the auction table. Gavin immediately had to bid on Sandy's famous Shortbread Cookies! He watched the auction table like a hawk and made sure to let me know anytime we were outbid. He was not going to lose out on those cookies! There were many other items as well, gift baskets, trips, experiences and lots of sports memorabilia. There was something for everyone!
As we kept an eye on the auction items, we watched USF and St. Leo college battle it out for a few matches. Then it was onto the real deal, John Isner. The boys got so excited when they saw him come in from around the corner.....it's him, it's him!! He's sooo tall! We sat in the stands, with a few hundred people, with our heads going back and forth watching the balls every move! John's competitor was 17 years old, and had one incredible serve! He's definitely someone we need to keep an eye on, he's going to be a star!
One of our favorite parts of the event is when the audience gets a chance to return John's serve. It's $100 and all proceeds go to FARA. I think there were about 15 people this year that participated. All of them did an amazing job and really had a great time doing it. Each participant also got to take home an autographed ball from John. Even Gavin got to return a serve!
Afterwards, John signed autographs, took pictures and talked to all who attended. He really is an amazing guy, who's dedicated to helping FARA find a cure for FA. We thank him for continuing to do this event and taking the time to help all of us who battle FA everyday! It means so much to have him on our journey.
The 2015 Ace for a Cure raised over $100,000 for FARA!
