FARAFARA Cure FA

6th Annual Century 21 King Golf Classic

The Friedreich’s Ataxia community has so many wonderful people working so hard towards a singular goal: treatment and a cure for FA. I always feel so blessed and thankful to attend FARA events, it’s so encouraging to be striving for a different future alongside fantastic people as dedicated as the Lamascus and Cardenas families. The Annual Century 21 King Golf Classic, held in Fontana, California on September 19th, is the result of the dedication and faithful friendship between two families.

When Josh Lamascus was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia his dad, Brian, asked his good friend, Julio Cardenas, if Julio’s annual golf classic could be dedicated to raising funds for the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance. The answer was and continues to be a very supportive YES! When I say that this tournament is rooted in faithful friendship, I am not exaggerating one bit, the bond between these families is strong and clear to all that attend the event. In the face of something as devastating as a diagnosis of FA, faith and friendship can move mountains. I am so thankful to be pushing towards the same finish line as the people behind this event, I have no doubt we will reach the triumphant end!

It was a beautiful day for golf in Southern California (not that I play or anything), and the 6th Annual Century 21 Golf Classic was an absolute success from beginning to end. I was not able to be there until the dinner that evening but I heard that the golf tournament was great! 125 golfers enjoyed a leisurely day on the beautiful greens of Sierra Lakes Golf Course. I would definitely venture to say that the day was made even better knowing that they were able to play golf for a great cause, and I’m also sure the delicious lunch provided by Outback Steakhouse was the icing on the cake!image

The dinner followed and consisted of a video presentation of “The Ataxian” documentary trailer with a few words from Ambassador Kyle Bryant, a moving speech from Josh Lamascus, a ticket raffle, a live auction and a 50/50 raffle. The evening was incredible to say the least and over $22,000 (and counting) has been raised to continue funding research efforts to put an end to Friedreich’s Ataxia. In my opinion, and I’m sure many others feel exactly the same, the highlight of the evening was hearing from Josh. Josh is fearless and strong and his character shined through all the words he shared. He wasn’t afraid to talk about the ugly side of living with Friedreich’s Ataxia, the constant struggle and the dreams that have died in this disease’s wake. And even though FA makes life incredibly difficult, it’s not going to win. People like Josh, his entire family and all his friends are going to make sure of this; there’s hope!

A very big thank you to the Lamascus and Cardenas families, Century 21 King, Outback Steakhouse, Chino Commercial Bank, Rotolo Cheverolet, UPS, Sierra Lakes Golf Course and everyone who contributed to make this day an amazing success!! Families tied together with a purpose. A silver lining! Families tied together with a purpose. A silver lining! Josh finished his speech by quoting FARA President and Founder, Ron Bartek, and it seems to be the best way to end this post as well….
