FARAFARA Cure FA

Costume for a Cure!

CostumeforaCure1On Sunday, October 25th, three friends and I got in costume and made the 2 ½ hour drive to St. Clairsville, OH to attend the FA Halloween costume bash. Other than rideATAXIA Philly (which I went to for the first time this year), I’ve never been to a FARA fundraiser, so I was very excited! Additionally, I’m at the age where we certainly celebrate Halloween, but simple costumes are perfectly sufficient. I was excited to have a reason to go all out with my costume!

St. Clairsville is a charming little town in Southeast Ohio near Wheeling, West Virginia that I did not know existed. Almost there, we were still in the middle of nowhere, but then all of a sudden we were driving down a small street lined with these adorable little shops, and I couldn’t help but smile. On our way to Undo’s, we passed a Dairy Queen (naturally, we decided at that moment to stop for Blizzards on our way back to school).

CostumeforaCure2Once we got to Undo’s restaurant, Chelsea Conley’s mom quickly greeted me and introduced me to other guests, including Chelsea herself. Chelsea, along with her mom and some friends, realized an Eastern Ohio FARA fundraiser was in demand and put on this event for the first time this year. I love meeting other FAers, and I was pleasantly surprised at how many were there. Really made me wonder how many FAers there are in my area that I’ve never met.

The event was catered by Undo’s (such a welcome change from dining hall food), and there were also a variety of drinks and desserts. The ballroom the event was held in had a dance floor, and there was a DJ and an area to take photos. I got a much longed for rubber FARA bracelet as a party favor, which I proudly wear every day now. I talked to Chelsea after the event to thank her for putting the event on, and I found out the event raised about $7000, which is amazing and means so much to the whole community! Chelsea was surprised too; for her first year she did not expect to make so much. It was a fun event, saw a great turnout, and raised thousands more than expected; she definitely plans to hold the costume bash again next year!

The FARA Ambassador Program

The FARA Ambassadors are a united team of patient volunteers living with FA who are committed to supporting FARA in the search for a treatment and cure.

Together we seek to know more about FA, and FARA so we can be prepared to represent the community when the opportunity arises; speaking at events, to volunteers, potential donors, scientific groups, pharma partners, media interviews and other awareness and fundraising opportunities. We believe support is key to continued success toward our ultimate goal of treatment and a cure. Participants in the FARA Ambassador Program are passionate about building and upholding relationships within the FA community.

The FARA Ambassadors are positive, supportive, peer representatives for the FA community, actively raising awareness and funds for FARA. To learn more about the FARA Ambassador Program or to have a FARA Ambassador speak at your event, please contact: info@cureFA.org.
