FARAFARA Cure FA

Funny 4 Funds Comedy Night

Funny4Funds1Have you ever heard the one about the deaf guy cleaning an apartment for the blind guy? I promise you, the real story is funnier than what you might be imagining!

We laughed over this and many other comical scenarios thanks to a stand-up comedy show put on by Funny 4 Funds; the group hosts comedy events as a fundraising platform for local causes. On July 31st, nearly 200 people packed the VFW in Cranston, RI to enjoy some entertainment while raising funds and awareness for FARA. With a silent auction raffle, T-shirt sales, and ticket proceeds, the night raised $6,000 for FARA – nothing funny about that, just a great success for the hard-working team! It was exciting to see a packed house supporting FARA and great that everyone left with a smile, clutching their sides.

Since its inception 10 months ago, Funny 4 Funds has raised over $400,000 for great causes in the southern New England area. Mike Murray, one of the founders and comedians at Funny 4 Funds was hearing impaired until receiving cochlear implants and starting a career in stand-up comedy (see, I was serious about the deaf guy jokes!). Much of his routine draws from his experiences being deaf in “non-standard” situations. It was great to hear him adopt comic interpretations of living with an impairment – a reminder that perception shapes circumstance. His co-founder and fellow comedian Bill Simas, brought a hilarious twist to many of the monotonous daily routines. It was a reminder that even without a disease like FA, life can be tough – the strong just smile, laugh about what they can’t control, and keep moving forward. Just don’t follow any of Bill’s advice – a few lucky audience members got his “life lessons” during the show!

As entertaining as all the events have been this summer, they are only the appetizer to the main course. The 6th annual Race for Matt & Grace will be held in RI on September 26th. Visit the official race site at: fara.convio.net/MattAndGrace15

The FARA Ambassador Program

The FARA Ambassadors are a united team of patient volunteers living with FA who are committed to supporting FARA in the search for a treatment and cure.

Together we seek to know more about FA, and FARA so we can be prepared to represent the community when the opportunity arises; speaking at events, to volunteers, potential donors, scientific groups, pharma partners, media interviews and other awareness and fundraising opportunities. We believe support is key to continued success toward our ultimate goal of treatment and a cure. Participants in the FARA Ambassador Program are passionate about building and upholding relationships within the FA community.

The FARA Ambassadors are positive, supportive, peer representatives for the FA community, actively raising awareness and funds for FARA. To learn more about the FARA Ambassador Program or to have a FARA Ambassador speak at your event, please contact: info@cureFA.org.
