3rd Annual Westchester Triathlon Fundraiser Friedreich's Ataxia
September 17, 2006
About Donovan
Donovan is a happy, enthusiastic nine-year old boy whose love of life is apparent in the many activities that he enjoys. Some of them include swimming, skiing, playing video games, watching movies, building models and playing Yu-Gi-Oh to name a few. Donovan attends third grade at PS 29 in Yonkers, NY where they have provided for his physical needs so that he can excel as a student. After many years of our son falling unexpectedly and not knowing why, he was diagnosed with Friedreich's Ataxia in June, 2003. It was devastating news for our family; however, the support from our family and friends has been overwhelming and allows us to handle each day as it comes.
Last year was Donovan's first MDA summer camp where he thoroughly enjoyed himself and made some amazing friends. Our lives have changed, but for the most part we live a normal life. We are working hard to spread the word of the disease and raise funds for a cure. This little boy was a gift from God. We have learned through his disease to enjoy each day as it comes, and there is a lot of fun out there to be had!
About the Event
This year marks Team Donovan's third fundraiser and each year we (Donovan's family) are overwhelmed at the support of our community. What started out 2 years ago as a friend wanting to do something to support our family after finding out Donovan had FA has turned out to be a major event. After Jennie did such a good job the first year, other friends decided to get involved. In fact Debra (the mom) was so moved by what was accomplished that she put together a relay team and became the swimmer. Team Donovan rallied 2 relay teams and 3 individuals for the goal of raising funds for FARA, and let's not forget all the amazing people who became letter writers and organizers.
We are now planning our third event on Sunday, September 17, 2006. This year the entry for the triathlon has opened and we are pleased to announce that Team Donovan will have 7 relay teams and 6 individuals participating in the event, so far. This year not only is Debra continuing to swim but Norm (the dad) will be trying out his new hips by doing the 25 mile bike ride.
The amount we collect each year for FARA is amazing. The first year over $26K was raised and over $31K for the second year. Although the money is important, Team Donovan also fulfills a second goal and that is to raise awareness for Friedreich's Ataxia. Donovan knows what everybody is doing and why we are fundraising. You will find him at the finish line cheering for each person as they complete the race, knowing that it is one step closer to finding a cure. Go Team Donovan!!!
