Alex's Story
I never really knew what it was like to have limits to your life...well of course that is until I turned eight years old. I was diagnosed with Friedreich’s Ataxia when I was going into third grade, and my life hasn’t been the same since. Slowly, my ability to do things that any child my age could do started to decrease, and I was permanently put in a wheelchair in seventh grade. Through all of this, I never gave up hope; there is a reason for everything that happens, whether good or bad, and in the end all you can do is keep your head up and just go on with life. In the summer before my freshman year, I had to get a spinal fusion where they put a metal rod to brace my spine. I was not able to attend my eighth grade graduation, and I was bed-ridden for three months. I may not be able to dance, or walk down the halls in school, but that is not a necessity in my life. I am able to love, believe, and keep my head up...and that takes the most strength. My mom is there for me every minute of every day, and I could not be any more thankful for that. I have friends who love and care about me, and are genuine enough to see past the wheelchair. In my spare time I like to talk to friends online, hang out at people’s houses, watch movies and just enjoy my life in every way possible. I believe that my future is already decided, and the only way to go is forward and live each day to the fullest.
