Carrie BolingerName Carrie Bolinger

Age 38

Where do you call home? Eastern Colorado

Education degree: I have a Bachelor's degree in Accounting.

Who do you live with? I am single and live by myself.

What's a typical day for you? I usually go swimming in the mornings at 5:30 am, and then off to work for 8 hours. After work, I usually, go hang out with friends, relax on the couch, or work part-time jobs.

How long have you known you are living with FA? I was diagnosed in July 2017 after seeing my balance declining.

Are there any others with FA in your family? My older brother was diagnosed 15 years before me.

Describe an adaptation and/or transition you have had to take due to living with FA. I use a cane when hiking in the mountains.

What do you like to do to stay active and what type of exercises work for you to stay strong? I am very fortunate that I grew up swimming, so I still do that as a Master Swim Team Member. I also hike with friends, bike at the gym and try to stay active.

What is a good trick to make daily life easier? I have found just looking at the things that I can still do make adjusting easier.

Carrie Bolinger CollageWhen FA gets you down, what do you think/do to feel better? I either talk to my brother/ family or I get up and move. I am grateful for the blessings that God has provided me and just taking this disease head-on.

What is one way living with FA has POSITIVELY affected your life? It has drawn me closer in my relationship with God and in some ways my brother. We have always been close, but I feel that FA has made me appreciate the support that he gives. It also gives me a way to share my Faith while struggling with a disease.

What is a favorite motivational quote of yours? I cling to Philippians 4:13- I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me.

What is a piece of advice that someone with FA has given you that encourages and inspires you? Don't focus on the things that you can' do, but focus on the things you can do. Don't give up!

What is the first thing you want to do when a cure/treatment to FA is found? I would probably call my brother and celebrate, and then go climb a mountain with the friends that have supported me through this journey.

"I have FA but FA doesn't have me." What does this statement mean to you? To me, this means never giving up, and letting FA rule what you can and cannot do. I continue doing the things that I love to do, and being vulnerable with others.
