FARA’s computer systems are based primarily in the United States and the content of our Website is directed to U.S. residents and is not directed to residents of other countries. FARA closely collaborates with FARA Europe in our mission to focus resources and relationships to cure Friedreich’s ataxia. While FARA does not market our services to non-U.S. residents, under certain circumstances we may collect or process personal information of non-U.S. residents. - FA Global Patient Registry –Individuals with FA (or parents of children with FA) residing anywhere in the world have an ability to enter their personal data into the FA global registry platform, subject to their informed consent. Enrollment into the FA Global Patient Registry allows individuals to receive recruitment notices for any clinical trials for which they may be eligible and allows individuals to be kept up-to-date on the progress of clinical trials. The FA Global Patient Registry data is operated by our service providers pursuant to data sharing agreements, with data stored in Canada and accessed by FARA employees in the US and FARA Europe in Europe.
- FARA grant program - Researchers throughout the world may apply for FARA grants. As part of their application, researchers share their name, work email, work phone, work address. This information is shared with FARA’s Scientific Review Board and the Board of Directors for the purposes of review of the grant applications. Data collection for the FARA grant program is operated by our service provider pursuant to a data sharing agreement with FARA, with data stored in the US.
- FARA Ambassador program - This is a voluntary program, where individuals who have FA can become spokespeople for FARA, contributing blogs, speaking at events, thanking donors, and participating in similar engagements. FARA collects the following personal information from Ambassadors: name, address, contact information. Individuals may voluntarily provide their date of birth at their election, in order to receive a greeting card from FARA on their birthday.
If you visit our Website or subscribe to our services, including FA Global Patient Registry, we will collect and process your personal data in the United States, where data protection and privacy regulations may or may not be equal to the level of protection as in other parts of the world, such as in Canada and the European Union. Additionally, with respect to participants in our Ambassador program, Ataxian Athlete Initiative (AAI) and/or advocacy program, we collect information on ataxia diagnosis, which is self-reported by applicants.
This Personal Information is required to provide services to you and information that may be of interest to you, such as research to reach treatments and cures for FA, as well as to provide education, raise funds for research, and promote public awareness. If you do not provide the Personal Information we ask for, it may delay or prevent us from providing services to you.
HOW YOUR PERSONAL INFORMATION IS COLLECTED
We collect the majority of your Personal Information directly from you through our Website, and, under certain circumstances, via our web store service provider when providing the products you request from us, via email, a form on our Website, by telephone or at in-person or virtual events. We cannot respond to your request or provide you with personal information if we cannot authenticate your identity or authority to make the request and confirm the personal information relates to you. Making an access request does not require you to create an account with us. We will only use personal information provided in a consumer request to authenticate the requestor’s identity or authority to make the request.
Under certain circumstances, we may deny your request for the reasons permitted by the applicable law, which we will specifically identify for you. Response Timing and Format
We endeavor to respond to a verifiable consumer request within 30 days of its receipt or within the time frame permitted by the law in your jurisdiction. If we require more time, we will inform you of the reason and extension period in writing. If you have an account with us, we will deliver our written response to that account. If you do not have an account with us, we will deliver our written response by mail or electronically, at your option. The response we provide will also explain the reasons we cannot comply with a request, if applicable. For data portability requests, we will select a format to provide your personal information that is readily useable and should allow you to transmit the information from one entity to another entity without hindrance.
We do not charge a fee to process or respond to your verifiable consumer request unless it is excessive, repetitive, or manifestly unfounded. If we determine that the request warrants a fee, we will tell you why we made that decision and provide you with a cost estimate before completing your request. For example, in cases where requests from a consumer are distinctly unsubstantiated or excessive, in particular because of their repetitive character, FARA may either charge a reasonable fee, in FARA’s discretion, taking into account the administrative costs of providing the information or communication or taking the action requested; or refuse to act on the request altogether

PHILATHROPY is based on voluntary action for the common good. It is a tradition of giving and sharing that is primary to the quality of life. To ensure that philanthropy merits the respect and trust of the general public, and that donors and prospective donors can have full confidence in the Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA), FARA declares that all donors have these rights:
- To be informed of FARA’s mission, of the way FARA intends to use donated resources, and of its capacity to use donations effectively for their intended purposes.
- To be informed of the identity of those serving on FARA’s governing board and staff leadership, and to expect the board and leadership to exercise prudent judgment in their stewardship responsibilities
- To have access to FARA’s most recent financial statements.
- To be assured their gifts will be used for the purposes for which they were given.
- To receive appropriate acknowledgement and recognition.
- To be assured that information about their donations is handled with respect and with confidentiality to the extent provided by law.
- To expect that all relationships with individuals representing FARA will be professional in nature.
- To be informed whether those seeking donations are volunteers or employees of FARA. FARA does not hire outside paid solicitors.
- To have the opportunity for their names to be deleted from mailing lists.
- To feel free to ask questions when making a donation and to receive prompt, truthful and forthright answers.

The Friedreich’s Ataxia Research Alliance (FARA) mission is to marshal and focus the resources and relationships needed to cure FA by raising funds for research, promoting public awareness, and aligning scientists, patients, clinicians, government agencies, pharmaceutical companies and other organizations dedicated to curing FA and related diseases. FARA will enter into relationships with corporations and accept corporate donations. This policy is intended to ensure that the corporate relationships entered into and donations accepted by FARA are conducted in a manner consistent with our mission, guiding principles, and strategic initiatives and that FARA never compromises its independence or the organization’s credibility or integrity.
FARA’s involvement with the biopharmaceutical industry is essential to the accomplishment of its mission and, as a result, FARA will be transparent about such involvement (appropriate reporting to the IRS, public disclosure on website and in publications, etc.). FARA will especially to be cognizant of the importance of transparency, full disclosure, appropriate reporting, and unbiased presentations on our website and in our publications.
FARA shall avoid conflicts of interest, or even its appearance, when accepting donations from or forming strategic partnerships with corporations with interests in the research, development and commercialization of treatments for Friedreich’s ataxia. As such, if a FARA board member participates on a corporate patient advisory board, committee or any other similar entity organized by a corporate partner, that board member will recuse him/herself from any discussion around that partner. All FARA staff, board members and scientific advisors will sign FARA’s conflict of interest policy and provide conflict of interest disclosure annually.
- FARA may accept financial support from corporations in the form of grants, sponsorship, and/or professional support for educational purposes (e.g., conferences, videos, publications), fundraising purposes, and/or research initiatives (e.g., co-funding research grants). Any financial support from corporations will be limited to mutually agreed upon goals and will not create any additional expectation of reciprocity.
- FARA will always exercise independent judgment in all its decision-making. FARA retains sole discretion for the content, quality, and scientific and educational integrity of all sponsored programs, events, and publications.
- FARA will not endorse any product for financial gain and/or as part of any corporate relationship. FARA will not recognize or certify the quality or standards of a particular company including its products or services. FARA’s name and logo should not be associated with a specific corporate branded product.
- FARA will disclose financial support received from corporations with interests in FA on its website annually and FARA will disclose financial and/or in-kind services from corporations, when requested.
- FARA will not enter into any exclusive arrangements in corporate relationships or partnerships.
- FARA will treat all corporate sponsors fairly and honestly.
- FARA’s board of directors will evaluate on an annual basis the total amount of corporate support received as a percentage of total FARA revenue.
